It’s almost here! The fall season is just around the corner and that means lots of sports activities. Whether you are sending your kids off to football practice or playing in your own basketball league, don’t forget to protect your smile. Just think what you would look like with a missing front tooth! Not to mention the inconvenience and cost of repair.
A properly fitted mouthguard, or mouth protector, is an important piece of athletic equipment that is often forgotten or overlooked. Mouthguards protect injuries not only to the teeth but to the lips, tongue and jaw. They cushion any impact and may even reduce the severity of concussions.
You’ve probably seen them worn in heavy contact sports like football and hockey, but studies in sports dentistry have shown that mouthguards protect athletes even in non-contact sports. Many experts recommend that everyone – from children to adults – wear a mouthguard during any recreational activity that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth.
Here is a helpful article from the American Dental Association that offers tips to keeping your smile safe: http://www.ada.org/sections/scienceAndResearch/pdfs/patient_40.pdf
So be sure to protect your kids and yourself from serious mouth injuries and look into wearing a mouthguard and keeping that smile beautiful!
I’ll be cheering the Razorbacks on this Saturday in their season opener and wishing you lots of fun and safety in all your fall activities.
